Stefanie Grawe aka Gray is a Cologne-based artist, designer and musician with a passion for graphic design, music production and audiovisual media.

Teaching

/ Music Production / Sound Design / Graphic Design / Video Production

Stefanie was a guest lecturer at the Köln International School of Design (KISD) and taught students in music production and sound design – i.e. with Ableton Live – as well as the visualization of their songs, such as artwork and m
usic videos. Take a look at the project results below.

Lo-Fi Love

Visual Music / Music Visuals /

It crackles and it rustles. In this audiovisual KISD project 22 design students dedicated themselves to the love of lo-fi music and compose their own song. For this they dealt intensively both theoretically and practically with the associated production techniques, analyzed popular pieces of music and experimented with different sounds. Of course, they also designed a visual identity in the form of cover artwork and music video. All results are presented and described in detail on the following website.

HiOnLoFi – Ducktapes

»Something is coming from the depth of your local park. Tapes were found – DUCKTAPES. This burning, new-school, old-school, electronic, enigmatic miracle of hip-hop music is a virtuous composition, that will bring joy to your ears. Preorder now, and get the Premium VHS-Edition of DUCKTAPES!«

Moodswings – mMM x3

»’mMM x3‘ is about the turbulent journey of mixed feelings after a radical change in life. A feministic take on reclaiming negatively connoted emotions, or rather the whole process of going through mood changes, while embracing femininity and empowerment. The storyline of the song is written as a monologue and serves as an emotional vehicle to get closer to a person whom the viewer can identify with or develop an antipathy.«

Housewifes – Adinoki

»We all feel this loneliness after covid and lockdowns and the struggle to fit in. Everyone wants our attention: our parents, peers, school, work and social media. Our brain is on constant fire with no place to escape. We want loneliness, and at the same time we don’t. Our song is capturing exactly this feeling – being torn between two worlds and not belonging to either one.«

VESK – New Faces

»The song ,New Faces‘ is targeting the social interaction of people that are open minded, feeling the music and getting lost in it. As pumping and characteristic drums drive the song, spherical strings and dreamy samples carry you off into another experience of Lo-Fi music.«

M-VAC – Serendipity

»An unplanned, fortunate discovery: In the middle of the city mosh everything seems oppressed by the grey. Two urban kids will take you on an unforeseen journey to another world. By trying to escape the urban jungle, reality keep scatching up with them. Their greedbecomes their fate.«

Sweet and Sour – Just a summer whisper

»Their warm and calming Lo-Fi Track ,Just a Summer Whisper‘ will accompany you all through summer and certainly will make you miss the warm weather once the summer is over. Whether you listen to the track while getting ready, studying for a test or taking a stroll through the city it will give you the feeling of a light summer evening. Listeners have called the song ,Mellow and chill‘, this atmosphere is also portrayed in the music video. You can look forward to hearing more from them soon, but for now listen to ,Just a Summer Whisper‘ and let the soft sounds have their effect on you.«

MXL#9 How does the MXL sound?

Producing an Audio Identity & Sound Design

Initiated by Prof. Nina Juric, the Motion Experience Lab is a series of projects with renowned guests from diverse teaching and research fields and focus on applied design research of augmented motion in the context of performative interaction and interdisciplinary media studies. This exploratory innovative living lab within a varying conceptual framework of cross-disciplines is primarily about conducting hands-on research in high-tech environments on custom-built prototypes and designed artifacts, exploring aspects of movement, audiovisuality, spatial performance, interaction, and experience design.
This time it's addressing the world of sound design. We are constantly inventing new technologies, searching for innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. But how does »innovation«, »high-tech«, »VR« and »performative interaction« sound? The goal of this project was to design and produce a sound identity for the MXL in collaboration with Stefanie Grawe. How could an audio logo or teaser music be implemented accordingly? Which tools do we need? Which associations help us? During these two weeks, we intensively + daily studied both theoretically and practically electronic and analog music production techniques, analyzed music, created a sound library and experimented with sounds that are now presented on this website. For the final result, both a song for a trailer, a soundscape and a logo should be produced in different time frames and be recognisable as a corporate identity.
